What is the difference between kung fu and karate?

Also include the difference in other forms of martial arts (judo, tae kwon do...etc.) please|||martial arts share a common goal: to defeat a person physically or to defend oneself from physical threat. In many martial arts, training goes beyond fighting to include personal, mental, and spiritual development.

Martial Arts each focus on a particular physical defense style or characteristic:

Striking (e.g. Boxing, Karate, Bando)

Kicking, (e.g. Taekwondo, Savate, Capoeira)

Grappling and throwing (e.g. Wrestling, Shuai Jiao, Jujutsu, Judo, Hapkido)

Weaponry (e.g. Iaido, Naginata-do, Bojutsu, Kendo, Fencing)

Kung Fu, or more precisely %26quot;wushu%26quot;, refers to the many diverse Chinese martial arts, some of which include: Shaolin, Shuai Chiao, Wing Chun, Zui Quan, Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, Yiquan, Lau Gar, Hung Gar and many more. The Chinese words kung fu can be used to describe one%26#039;s skill in any discipline, not just martial arts.

Karate meaning %26#039;Empty hand%26#039; (originally %26#039;Chinese hand%26#039;), is perhaps the most popular martial art in Japan and the West.

Judo means gentle way, (%26#039;Do%26#039; means %26#039;Way of%26#039;), a Japanese martial art and sport that consists of techniques from many jujutsu schools.

Taekwondo is a modern Korean martial sport, with literal meaning %26quot;the way of the hand and foot%26quot;. Along with Judo, one of only two Asian martial arts to make it into the Olympic Games.

See, they%26#039;re really NOT just different words for the %26quot;same thing%26quot;.

Oh, yeah, Capoeira -- Brazilian martial art is a survival-oriented dance-fight-game originally developed in the 16th century by Angolan slaves in Brazil. It emphasizes kicks, dodging, take downs, and mental training. This mental training can include trickery, an awareness of the opponent, and understanding of rhythm. Sometimes looks a lot like break dancing. Very cool.|||Differences Between Taekwondo, Karate, and Kung-Fu:

1. They are all from different countries (obvious but you never know)

2. They were all designed for different purposes (Taekwon Do is 80% kicking and most of the high kicks were designed for kicking invaders off of horses)

3. They are all from different time periods. Taekwondo (meaning the Way of The Hand and Foot) didn%26#039;t get it%26#039;s current name until 1953.

4. Most of the arts in the Asian region were influenced by each other.

5. Jiujitsu (traditional) was actually banned in Japan during the 1980%26#039;s because of the Yakuza. It was created for use by the smurai when they didn%26#039;t have their swords ont hem.

6. Korean arts were banned during the Japanese occupation of Korea in 1910 when they brought their own arts over. This is why Taekwondo resembles Karate.

7. Japan tried to invade Korea in the 1560%26#039;s and literally got their asses handed back to them due to the Hwarang-Do (using techniques that would become solidified into official Taekwondo 400 years later)

Hope this helps. Later!|||there is a big difference in kung fu and karate, not only in origin but in style as well.

kung fu is a chinese martial art. the origin of kung fu is lost in the pages of time. however there are many forms of kung fu, from shaolin kung fu, to hung gar, five animal system, to taijiquan. the term kung fu is used globally as a generic term for the Chinese martial arts, certain chinese words may be used to denote some specific aspect of a style. there are two styles in kung fu, external and internal. internal martial arts is a style that uses the bodies chi flow (energy) to coordinate the leverage of the relaxed body as opposed to the use of brute strength. as in taijiquan (tai chi chuan) instead of meeting your opponents resistance with resistance, you allow his resistance to be his opponent, by going with your opponents energy, instead of engaging it, you are hindering his attack.

external forms of martial arts are forms where you meet resistance with resistance, you use strength against strengths, as in karate, hung gar, boxing, kickboxing, etc...

karate is a japanese martial art. originating on the island of okinawa. it is known primarily as a striking art, featuring punching, kicking, knee/elbow strikes and open handed techniques. however, grappling, joint manipulations, locks, restrains, throws and vital point striking are inherent to the art.

Judo is a refinement of the ancient japanese martial art of Jujutsu (a grappling art out of japan). That consists of throws and grappling. It is also an olympic sport.

Tae Kwon Do is a modern martial arts from korea that is characterized by its fast, high and spinning kicks, it too is an olympic sport.

Then you have aikido. Aikido is a Japanese martial art involving some throws and joint locks that are derived from Jujitsu and Kenjutsu. Aikido focuses on using their opponents own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It was the signature art of the Japanese Samari.

Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) is unique among other kinds of fighting disciplines in its approach to close quarters fighting. Fighters are able to more effectively use their elbows, knees, feet and fists than in other martial arts. Similar to American style kickboxing, muay thai uses the same elements with the exception of knees and elbows in most respects.

MMA, or mixed martial arts, is a combination of kickboxing, boxing, and grappling. A growing sport in the US, mma has been at the forefront of spectator sport in countries like japan for years.

With federations like Pride, UFC and others the sport of mixed martial arts will soon be the number one fighting sport in the nation, winning over more and more fans thanks to the efforts of SpikeTV and the UFC. MMA fighters are highly disciplined individuals, most trainning 6 days a week working on all aspects of their sport, becoming proficient in striking as well as grappling (some more than others of course).

if you want to know of any other martial arts inparticular, just give me a buzz!|||correct me if i%26#039;m wrong

kung fu is supposedly the original martial art that everything has evolved from|||Kung fu is for old people or a boys who watch too much movies. Their technique are more for show and artistic. Would most likely get your *** kick.

Judo is a sweep and throwing art. It also include some locks. It%26#039;s very effective style if teach by a teacher who reguarly take their students to competition.

Tae Kwon Do is for those who do martial arts to look cool. Their kicks is a huge joke. Their kicks will most likely get them knocked down even if they land the kicks. Their hands... don%26#039;t even ask.

Karate, it is a fighting style combine with striking and kicks. More modern one are Kyokushin, Seido, and other styles. The modern one can be extremely effective. Older style such as Shotokan and Goju are outdated.

Muay Thai is a striking art. They%26#039;re also called %26quot;King of kicks%26quot; due to their nasty kick. They%26#039;re known to kicks so hard that it shatter arm bone (no kidding, look up Apidej who once broke both opponent%26#039;s arms with single kick). They also have elbows and knees which make them more effective in close quarter.|||alot kung fu is just a umbrella term for chinese martial arts and karate is refined version of the strikeing aspects of jujitsu|||I put in references for all ages, so I hope this helps

The differences between many of the martial arts range from

close to each other in style and form with minor differences--

EX%26gt; Tinky Winky/LaLa/Dipstick/Po, pokemon/digimon, britney spears/willa ford, milly/vanilly

to not so close in style, similar forms

EX%26gt; burt/earney, teletubbies/barney/baby-bop, any mainstream hip-hop artists of today, Rolling Stones/Aerosmith/Queen/Led Zeppelin

to having nothing in common but being a martial art

EX%26gt; Kansas/Jethro Tull, James Bond/Rambo, Bush%26#039;s mouth/Bush%26#039;s actions

HAHA, slyguy_hzleyes@yahoo.com|||only difference is where it originated from|||There is no difference. They are just two names for the same general thing.
